Week 16 In Review All About The Galaxy Fold Oneplus 7 7 Pro Pixel 3a 3a Xl

Welcome to your recap of the week's hottest tech stories. Week 16 of the year marked the first live encounters with the Galaxy Fold across the web (and here at GSMArena HQ) and it didn't take long for the first issues to arise. Several of the early units' displays malfunctioned and while removing the protective layer on top of the screen was the explanation for some of them, other seemingly were just defective. Samsung issued a statement that it will look into the display issues and that users are not to remove the protective layer and that this would be made clear to buyers in the...

LG’s Software Upgrade Center Hasn’t Delivered On Its Promise Of Fast Updates

The fragmentation in Android OS updates often sees users having to wait a considerable amount of time for software updates. To fix this problem for its customers, LG launched a Software Upgrade Center about a year ago with the promise of speeding up Android updates for people who own LG smartphones. It turns out that the center hasn’t really delivered on that promise. When LG announced this ‘Global Software Upgrade […]

Weekly Poll Rear Vs Selfie Camera Which Is More Important

This week we saw the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G claim the title of "Best selfie camera", at least according to DxOMark. The phone's rear camera matched the score of the Huawei P30 Pro, which previously ruled alone. This along with the results from last week's poll got us wondering about front and rear cameras - which one is more important to you? We're well past the era when phones had only one camera (and it was on the back), yet for one reason or another the rear camera is still treated as more important and gets the better hardware. There are exceptions, for example, the Realme U1, has a...

One of the rumored features of Apple’s 2019 iPhones is that they are expected to see an improvement on the camera front. By that we mean that there have been reports claiming that Apple could be adding a third camera to the rear camera setup, and now thanks to new photos, it seems to be lending credence to the rumors. The photos were originally posted on Weibo and shared on Slashleaks […]

Samsung Galaxy Fold In For Review

When we received an invitation to give the Samsung Galaxy Fold a try, we immediately jumped the plane and headed to Samsung's office. There, an Astro Blue unit was waiting for us, and we already shared our initial impressions of the device. Now, however, we have the phone at HQ and we are eager to put it through its paces and see where it fits in the bigger picture. The first thing you see when you open the box is the majestic 4:3 OLED screen in an unfolded manner. It is pretty much a standard 7.3" tablet which, thanks to Samsung, you can now put comfortably in your pocket. And when it...

Weekly Poll Results Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Edges Out Samsung Galaxy A80

The Oppo Reno 10x zoom prevailed in last week's poll, beating the Samsung Galaxy A80 by a healthy margin. The rivalry between these two goes beyond selfie camera vs. rear camera, though these are clearly major parts of the phones' identities. The Oppo Reno 10x zoom will be only the second phone on the market to deliver a 160mm telephoto lens (same focal length as the P30 Pro, despite the possible confusion caused by the "x zoom" rating). Plus, people have more faith in the reliability of the shark fin pop-up selfie camera. A80's 48MP camera is used for selfies and normal photos •...

Counterclockwise New Networks Take 4 Years Before Mainstream Adoption

With the dawn of 5G upon us, we wanted to look at how quickly new networks are adopted. The first 2G networks appeared in 1991 then the first commercial 3G networks came alive in 2001 (but wouldn't reach Europe and the US until 2003). We'll use the relative popularity of 2G-only phones, 3G-enabled phones and then 4G phones to gauge adoption. We'll look at the last 25 years - starting the chart at 1994. But keep in mind that the 1991-2003 period is essentially all 2G. Early 3G phones didn't take the world by storm - MMS was cool, no one used video calls and data plans were still too...

Clock speeds are expected to be 1x2.9GHz + 1x2.4GHz + 6x1.8GHz and the Kryo 400-branded cores are likely going to be Cortex-A76 derivatives for the two main ones while the 6...

Dxo Mark Revises Lg V40 Thinq Score Its 94 Now

DxO Mark has published an update to its LG V40 ThinQ review bumping the overall score to 94, 1 up from the original result from a few days ago. The correction is due to an error they discovered in one of their tests. The sub-score that's changed is for Exposure and an increase from 83 to 88 has brought the photo score to 98 as opposed to the original 96, which in turn has led to the marginal improvement in the total result. 10 Plus Things You May Not Know About The Samsung Galaxy Fold

We've had the team's hands on the Samsung Galaxy Fold pretty much non stop ever since it arrived a couple of days ago and as we settle in for the weekend, we decided to gather a few early impressions of the novel gadget and share them with you. As a first-generation device, the Galaxy Fold is not without teething issues in need of ironing out, and we expect that some of these will be worked out by the time early adopters get their retail units in. Okay, now that the preamble is out of the way, let's quickly look at the few issues we've found before we move onto the exciting aspects of...

Lg Files Patent For Smartphone With Three Selfie Cameras

LG submitted a patent for a smartphone that features basic sketches of the device, outfitted with three rear cameras and three front-facing cameras. The patent was registered with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) and went live on Friday. The device in the diagrams appears to have three cameras in the notch cluster above the phone. Each camera's function isn't explicitly described, but we could speculate that one has a standard lens, another - ultra-wide, and the third might be a ToF sensor. Maybe not in that particular order, but given the LG G8's inclusion of the ToF sensor,...

Huawei Mate 20 X 5g Appears In A Handson Video

Over the past couple of days, the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G has made headlines as Huawei prepares at least two 5G devices for this year. After seeing a photo of the 5G version's retail packaging, a hands-on video of the device has been uploaded to YouTube on Friday by Zing Gadget. The video has a few angles of the Mate 20 X, prominently featuring a 5G logo on its backside. The specifications in the captions mention the two spec differences initially rumored earlier this week: the smaller 4,200 mAh battery, and the quicker 40W Super Charge support. Both the foldable Mate X and the huge...

Amazon Introduces Adsupported Free Version Of Prime Music In The Us

Amazon is now offering the option to US customers to access Amazon Prime Music service without having a Prime membership or Amazon Music Unlimited subscription. But before you rush to try the service, it comes with quite a few caveats. First of all, it is ad-supported, which should be expected but still worth mentioning. Second, and more importantly, it only works on Alexa-enabled devices, such as the Amazon Echo products, Sonos One, etc. This means you won't be able to play it through any of the Prime Music apps on any platform or the web. Lastly, you can't just play any...

Samsung Galaxy S10 Updated With Dedicated Night Camera Mode

One of the features of the Samsung Galaxy S10 is how it comes with a feature called Bright Night. For those unfamiliar, it is basically Samsung’s answer to Google’s Night Sight mode on its Pixel 3 smartphones, but the only problem is that it is an automated feature where it enables itself in extremely low-light situations. While we suppose that’s not a bad idea, we understand that users might want to […]

Blackberry Launches Red Edition Key2 In The Us

BlackBerry had previously launched the BlackBerry KEY2 Red Edition with a few key differences (no pun intended) over the standard KEY2 version that's currently available. BlackBerry is announcing the device's US availability. For starters, this is the KEY2 Red Edition. It's a totally red version of the KEY2, not to be confused with the KEY2 LE, which was announced back during IFA as a similar-looking Atomic Red color option. The exposed metal parts of the phone are bright red while the QWERTY keyboard remains black and the physical keys are silver. The Red Edition is made of the...

Huawei P30 Pro Survives A Torture Test With A Few Scratches

We got another durability test video from JerryRigEverything and this time the Huawei P30 Pro is the unfortunate victim. The handset went through the usual scratch, burn and bend tests and survived it all even if it got a scar or two. The back and side panels are indeed made of glass as the scratch test confirmed but Huawei made some important structural changes to this year's design. Last year's P20 Pro didn't survive the bend test while the P30 Pro handled the pressure with ease. Perhaps the curved glass on the back and front add more stability and rigidity to the frame and...
